Largest National Wildlife Refuge in the Caribbean opens: Zona Libre 1 de Mayo |
| When the gates at former Camp García were brought down by Viequenses (see the news, o en Español ), the old Naval training facilities had already been transferred to Fish and Wildlife. The new national refuge was named Zona Libre 1 de Mayo and is now the largest national refuge in the Caribbean. Most areas within the refuge are closed to the public. See Fish & Wildlife map. The areas of Bahia Corcho (former Red Beach) and Bahia de la Chiva (former Blue Beach) are the only ones open to the public. I went ahead and ventured a little bit farther to Ensenada Honda and La Plata beach under the understanding that I was getting into a risk area. The "rangers" working for Fish & Wildlife will not detain you or prevent you from going into the areas not open to the public, they will advise you not to do it because of the risks of an area so near the Navy's now closed bombing range. There is the risk of contamination and unexploded ordnance. New regulations are in place for the refuge area. See the regulations here (o en Español). See Fish & Wildlife site about Vieques. |
