Vieques Island, also called La Isla Nena (small girl island), has recently started receiving the name as one of the "Spanish Virgin Islands". Please do not dare say that in front of a local viequense as we do not like the comparison to the Virgin Islands. Although Isla de Vieques has a strong bond with St. Croix and St. Thomas, Vieques is not the Virgin Islands. Vieques Island is a Municipality of Puerto Rico located just 6 miles southeast of the main island. The two most populat Barrios in Isla de Vieques are: Esperanza, in the south; and Downtown Isabel II in the north. Esperanza is known for its fishing tradition and the boardwalk along its beach. Isabel II is Vieques Island's capital city. It is where the ferry boats arrive and is the economic center of town. The bank, post office, government offices, police, courthouse, city hall and most stores, including all the gas stations, are located here. Isabel II is going thru a revival due to the complete renovation of its Town Square (work finished in 2008). You will also find several exquisite restaurants near the center of town. The beauty of the Plaza and the historical architecture of the buildings are making Downtown Isabel II the place to go for a nice nighttime outing. La Isla Nena is truly Virgin. Vieques is one of the few islands that remain like what the Caribbean used to be in the 50's or 60's: tranquil, beautiful, undeveloped, lush, uncrowded. Isla de Vieques is a tropical Caribbean island with so many pristine beaches and so few tourists you are likely to find one beach just for yourself any day of the week. Most beaches at Isla de Vieques are undeveloped, surrounded by wild native flora and a beauty that rivals any beach in the Caribbean Islands. Each beach in Isla de Vieques is unique with it's own personality. Vieques Island is a place where horses are allowed to roam freely. Crystal clear waters, white sandy beaches, secluded bays... Come and see what true tropical, virgin, sandy beaches are like. Isla de Vieques sports the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world. If there is something you must do during your lifetime is to dive from the deck of a boat on a moonless night into the dark and serene Caribbean waters. You will see the water splash up in a burst of millions of lights like fireworks from undersea. As you move through the water you glow like a diving angel, and when you resurface, thousands of sparkling lights remain on you, if only for a brief moment, as if you were part of the magic. This natural wonder is still around for your enjoyment. Do not miss a trip to the biobay while in Vieques.

This Fort has been transformed into a museum, one of the must do things in la Isla de Vieques. Vieques Island is rich with history and the U.S. Navy has a central figure in it. At the Fort you can learn about the Vieques people's struggle to get the Navy out, which we finally did in 2003. You can get to Vieques by ferry from the town of Fajardo in Puerto Rico, or by plane from San Juan or Ceiba, Puerto Rico.
