Compaņeros is a
comfortable, simply and tastefully decorated three-bedroom, two full-bath
Caribbean house sitting in an ideal location just outside the beach town of
Esperanza. With a lovely view of the sea, palms and distant mountains and
frequently a spectacular sunset from the large verandah you never
forget where you are - in the tropics. The house is situated on 1/2 acre
of land and is perched on a small hill above the road where the delicate sound
of the famed free-roaming "paso fino" horses of Vieques can
often be heard.

| The porch is furnished with a dining table, chairs and ceiling fan so breakfast, lunch and dinner are all outdoor affairs if desired. Inside the spacious "great room" - an open-plan living/dining/kitchen area - offers further options for comfortable cooking, dining and relaxing. | |

The great room is full of windows but well shaded so that the trade winds blow through to keep you cool and the hot afternoon sun is kept out. A cordless phone is provided with free local calls and access to long distance with a calling card. Local Internet access can be arranged with coqui.net for a fee. |
| Cooking in the kitchen or on the porch at the grill (charcoal) is a delight with the sea always in sight. The kitchen is fully equipped with the usual modern conveniences - electric refrigerator, electric stove, blender, toaster, coffee maker - and all needed cooking and dining utensils. There is a washing machine in a small storage room off the porch and clothesline in the backyard. The house has an emergency water supply which will provide you with water for about a week in the event that the city water goes off (which happens on occasion). |  |

The 3 bedrooms are well ventilated; each has 2-4 large screened windows and a ceiling fan. Two of the bedrooms have queen size beds and the third has two twin beds. Colorful cotton sheets and towels (beach, bath and kitchen), beach chairs and beach cloths are provided. The two full baths have stall showers and are fully tiled, as are all the floors in the house. |

From the quiet country-like area of Compaņeros
you can walk to the Malecon (sea front promenade) and to the shops and
restaurants that line the road opposite, or to the nearest beach at the end of
the Malecon in 5 minutes. The near end of the beautiful mile long
scallop of beach at Sun Bay is just over a half mile away. Palm
trees line the beach where hammocks can be strung and occasional cement
picnic tables and benches can be found. The funky tour buses to the
Bioluminescent Bay pick up and drop off guests in the evenings at Bananas and
Tradewinds (favorite restaurants along the Malecon). Numerous other
restaurants in a range of prices line the road across from the Malecon, mostly
very casual, even allowing barefeet and swimsuits in some cases.
A small grocery store is one minute walk from the house and numerous
other small markets are scattered around Esperanza, all easily walkable.
The park with its playground, paths and tropical plantings is a pleasant place
to relax with children and the baseball field can offer some warm
evening entertainment. Your reading needs will be amply met at 18
degrees North where Lou keeps a corner full of books that others have
left behind and which anyone can borrow or keep - a kind of easy-going give-and-take
library. Lou's Puerto Rican Parrot, Ruby, will win your
affection with her talk and "requests" to have her head scratched.
The local museum has ancient relics from the time of the Carib Indians
as well as tanks of live sea creatures and an interesting shop. Snorkeling and
Scuba diving are available here as well. Everything in Esperanza is so
close that if you choose to vacation at Compaņeros
without a car you can be perfectly happy. Publicos (taxi/buses) are
available whenever you want to venture further - to "town" (Isabel
II), to a distant beach, to an inland or north shore restaurant. Or rent
a jeep for a day and explore the newly-opened Western Lands.
